Madras resident Alma Binder died Aug. 11, 2005, at East Cascade Assisted Living at the age of 82.
Mrs. Binder was born Sept. 4, 1922, in Hays, Kan., to parents Emma and Otto Weigel. She attended Hays State College from 1940-43 through her junior year, majoring in secretarial science, with a minor in music. In college she participated in numerous choir and orchestral productions, playing the violin. In 1943, she moved with her parents to LaGrande, and worked as a departmental secretary at Eastern Oregon College.
She married Julius "Jay" Binder on April 10, 1944, in El Paso, Texas, where he was stationed in the U.S. Army. There, she worked for an insurance agency.
She and Jay later moved to Kansas, where she worked for the U.S. Draft Board. In 1951, she moved with their children to her parents' home in LaGrande, while her husband served in the Korean War. During that time, she again worked at EOC as a departmental secretary.
The Binders moved to Madras in May 1952, where her husband accepted a job as the extension agent. She worked from the late 1950s to the late 1970s for the 509-J School District as a secretary and administrative assistant at several schools including Madras Elementary, Buff Elementary, Madras Junior High School, Madras High School and the Administrative Services Building. For several years in the mid-1970s, she worked as a legal secretary at the law offices of Sumner Rodriguez and Warren Albright in Madras. In 1978 she retired to care for her aging parents who were residents of Mountain View Living Center.
A committed homemaker, rearing three children while working outside the home, Mrs. Binder also enjoyed playing bridge, reading and playing the violin. As a lifelong member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, she volunteered her musical and secretarial services. She also volunteered in the 1950s at the Jefferson County Fair, and was a recent member of the Seniors of Jefferson County, where she participated in weekly meals and activities.
Her lifelong enjoyment of music as an accomplished violinist included membership with a 1950s chamber music group, Central Oregon Community College Symphony, Madras High plays, 19 years playing weekly at Mountain View Hospital Living Center for residents in the Music With Carol group, chamber ensembles with Carol Andrews Wallan, playing weekly at the senior center in Madras, and decades of participation with St. Patrick Choir. Besides providing personal enjoyment across seven decades, her violin was her medium of giving to others.
Due to Alzheimer's Disease, she entered East Cascade Assisted Living in March 2003, where she resided with the care of attentive staff, as well as with recent Mountain View Hospice services until her death.
Survivors include her husband, Julius "Jay" Binder of Madras; sons, Gregory Binder of Phoenix, Ariz., and Roger Binder of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughter, Christine "Christy" Binder Brown of Madras; sister, Clara "Mardy" Stenkamp of Boise, Idaho; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother Emma Weigel in 1984, her father, Otto Weigel in 1988, and her brother, Donald Weigel in 1981.
A recitation of the rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 17, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Madras, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 18, at the church. Burial will be at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park with arrangements under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mountain View Hospice, in care of Mountain View Hospital at 470 N.E. A St., Madras, OR 97741.
