John G. Smathers, 75, died early today at Cushing Memorial Hospital. Born Feb 22,1893 in Red River County, TX. Born to Richard A & Mary Etta Smathers. He married Opal Ruth Niles on Nov. 10, 1917 at Chickasha, OK. They moved to Leavenworth in 1948. He retired as an engineer at U.S. Penitentiary @ Leavenworth in 1963 after 15 years service. He was a veteran of WWI, and member of the Lansing Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge #10. The funeral was Thursday at 1:30 PM at Larkin Funeral Home. Burial at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery.
