As a boy, he attended St. Alban's School in Washington, D.C., where he sang in the boy's choir of the National Cathedral. As a teenager, he taught English in mission schools in the northern mountain provinces of the Philippines. He attended the University of Virginia, and upon graduation in 1942 enlisted in the Navy, serving during World War II as an antisubmarine warfare officer on destroyer escorts in the North Atlantic. In 1943, he married Rochet Raine Sydnor of Lynchburg, Virginia, and in 1946 entered the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria. He was ordained into the priesthood of the Episcopal Church in 1949. He received his doctorate from Eden Seminary in St. Louis. As a young priest, Dr. Blair served small churches in rural Virginia, including St. Paul's, Hanover, and Immanuel, Old Church, Alexandria. Later he was rector of suburban parishes in North Carolina, including St. Luke's in Salisbury, and Christ Church in Charlotte. He later served as the Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, St. Louis, Mo., and as Rector of Trinity Church, Boston, Mass., and Bruton Parish, Williamsburg, Va. After retirement, he served as interim rector of parishes in Staunton, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and New Orleans. A lifelong bird watcher, camper and fly fisherman.
