Murphy Alberta Goree was born in the city of Jefferson, Texas on October 9, 1887 - to the Union of Jack Bayliss and Flora Ballard Bayliss. She was one of six children - two girls and four boys. Mrs. Goree was the last SURVIVING member of her family.

She completed her elementary and high school education in the city public schools of Jefferson, Texas. Her college education began at Prairie View College. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Bishop College, Marshall, Texas.

In 1914, she was married to the late William H. Goree and to this union was born two children, a daughter, Dorothy and a son, Everett Virgil - who preceded her in death.

Her earliest religious affiliation was with the Macedonia Baptist Church in Jefferson, Texas. Upon moving to Texarkana, Texas, she and her family became active members of the Union Hill Baptist Church.

Murphy and Will H. as an "educational team" devoted their entire life together, working in the field of education. Starting their career in Lodi, Texas, they later taught in Naples, Texas, and Linden, Texas. In 1927, they moved to Texarkana, Texas and were employed as teacher and Principal at the New Town Elementary School - Which was later named the Harrison G. Goree Elementary School after Will H's father. She retired from the Goree School in June of 1963 after 36 years of service and a total of over 50 years in the field of teaching.

Mrs. Goree was a teacher of superior quality who firmly believed that every child could learn if given the proper instruction. Ex-pupils of hers fondly remember her persistence that school work must not only be DONE, but that it must be done NEATLY.

The matriarch of her family, she leaves to mourn her passing, a devoted daughter, Dorothy Goree Brown and a son-in-law, Clement Brown of Chicago, Illinois; a faithful daughter-in-law, Iona Richardson Goree of Texarkana, Texas; five granddaughter, Marva Adams of Chicago, Illinois, Yvette Harris, Sherian Jones, Vanessa Goree, and Renee Goree of Houston, Texas; five grandsons, Dennis Brown of San Diego, California, Keith Harris and Anthony Jones Sr. of Houston Texas, Dwayne Virgil Goree and William Everett Goree of Texarkana, Texas; two nieces, Nedra Beatrice Bayliss Heffner of Chicago, Illinois, and Alva Vital of Port Arthur, Texas; and one nephew, Roman Lee Brown of Texarkana, Texas; two sister-in-laws, Clotiel Fearonce Goree of Los Angeles, California and Altonette Bayliss of Chicago, Illinois.

For many years, she was a member and a past president of the Bluebonnet Social Club.

For the loving care given her during her later years, Mrs. Dorothy Abby and Mrs. Lillie Mae Tave will ever be remembered by the family.

She leaves - as a legacy - her ex-students who attest to the positive values she indelibly imprinted.
