Topeka State Journal Thursday 7 December, 1972:

FORT DODGE - Benjamin Pontius Burton, 96, a Spanish-American War veteran, Fort Dodge, died Wednesday of lung congestion. He was born April 25, 1876 at Stanton. He farmed near Paola until volunteering to fight in the 20th Kansas Volunteers, General Funston's famed regiment which fought the Spanish American War in the Philippines and later captured independence leader Emilio Aguinaldo. He was one of three surviving member of the volunteers and the third oldest veteran in the Kansas Soldiers Home here where he had lived since May 9, 1970.

He was a bridge and building foreman for the Santa Fe Railway's Amarillo Dev. and retired 19 years ago to become a part time cabinet maker. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter here.

He was preceded in death by 3 sons and his wife. Survivors include a son, Lynn Burton, Carlsbad, NM; a daughter, Charlene Burton, Cunningham; 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday at the First Christian Church at Ashland. Military graveside services will be at Highland Cemetery at Ashland. Minnis Funeral Home at Bucklin is in charge of arrangements.
