SLEDGE, AUGUSTA TUNSTALL SEARCY, age 105, of Greensboro, died at her home August 10, 2000.

Services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greensboro on Saturday, August 12, 2000, at 2:00 P.M. with the Rev. Fletcher Corner officiating. Burial will be at Greensboro Cemetery with Kirk Funeral Home directing. Mrs. Sledge was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Walter Sledge, Sr.; her parents, George A. and Cammie Tunstall Searcy; and a great grandson, Christopher Johnson Young.

She is survived by her son, Joseph Walter Sledge, Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Kathleen, of Tuscaloosa; grandsons, James Johnson Sledge of Tuscaloosa, Dr. J. Walter Sledge of Knoxville, Tennessee, George Searcy Sledge of Anniston; and granddaughter, Kathleen Sledge Young of Pensacola, Florida. Great grandchildren include: James Hunter Young, Stephen Joseph Young, Walter Matthew Young, Thomas George Young, Pensacola; Sarah Searcy Sledge, Raney Alexander Sledge, Anniston, Caitlin Marie Sledge, Meaghan Caroline Sledge and Christine Emily Sledge, Knoxville. Mrs. Sledge was a graduate of the University of Alabama in the Class of 1916 with a BS degree. She also earned a Masters degree from the University. In 1952 she was named Alumna of the Year by the University of Alabama Alumnae Association. During the Depression years she was State Director of President Franklin Roosevelt's National Youth Administration. Later, as Executive Director of the American Red Cross in Jefferson County, she was the first donor to the Jefferson County Red Cross Blood Bank. In her later years, she operated a cattle farm near Greensboro.

She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Greensboro Study Club, the Caxton Club in Birmingham, Kappa Delta Sorority, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Pallbearers will be J. Sydney Cook, Reuben Wright Cook, Cade Searcy Cook, Frederick Maxwell Elebash, Searcy LeGrand Elebash, Charles Abbott Thomas - all of Tuscaloosa, Joe L Sledge, Jr., Will C. Sledge, David Scott, Greensboro, and Joab Langston Thomas of Flomaton.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Wilmer Hall (children's home), 3811 Old Shell Road, Mobile, AL 36608-1396; to St. Paul's Episcopal Church,

Greensboro, AL 36744; or to a charity of your choice.
