Robert married Francis Sullivan in December of 1883 while working with his brother David as a butcher in Morning Sun, Iowa, 15 miles north of Burlington.
By the turn of the century, Robert had started to work for the Rock Island Railway Company as a fireman in Illinois.
Sometime after moving back to Iowa, Robert and Francis were divorced. Robert traveled to Omaha to be with his oldest brother James and his only sister Kate Daharsh. Around 1911, it is said that Robert died while living in Rockford, Illinois. His place of burial is not known at this time.
