The gravestone of Homer and Sarah Couch at Fairview Cemetery in Denison, Texas, indicates that Homer was born in 1888. On the 1900 U.S. census for Smith County, Texas, Lizzie Couch is listed as a widow and head of household with all her children. Homer's mother, Lizzie, listed Homer as having been born in March 1886. Homer listed 8 March 1887 as his birth date on his World War I draft card. In the 1880's good records of births were not maintained after the death of parents. No records were required by the government until social security came into being. Most likely, 8 March 1886 was Homer Charles Couch's birth date in that his mother was the most likely person to know his date of birth.

Homer's parents died when he was a teenage boy. After their deaths, he lived with an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. William Howell. The 1900 Smith County, Texas, United States census has Mrs. Lizzie Couch listed as a widow, with Homer and all of his brothers and sisters listed as well.

Homer's father, William M. Couch, likely died in the fall or early winter of 1897, and his mother, Lizzie Lee Towles Couch Brown, likely died in about 1904 or 1905, shortly after her second marriage to John Allen Brown on 12 April 1903.

Homer Charles Couch and Sarah Elvy Turner married in Clairette, Texas, on 26 December 1909. Their marriage license was issued in Erath County, Texas.
