James Buchanan Hamilton, the third child of Joseph A. S. Hamilton and Mary Ann Bingham Hamilton, was born in Sullivan County Missouri, January 24, 1858. He was one of twelve children born to Mary Ann and Joseph.

When a young man James, also known as JBH, went to Blanco County Texas, possibly to be a cattle driver and probably for the adventure. There he and Hester Martin, a neighbor girl from Missouri, applied for a marriage license on January 15, 1878 and were married. Their son, Theodore Pleasant Hamilton, was born November 21, 1878. A year or two later the family returned to Missouri and Hester died soon after of tuberculosis.

Leaving Theodore with his older brother, Alexander, James moved to Oldham County Kentucky. There he married Katie Agnes Collins on January 5, 1882 in La Grange. Three children were born in Kentucky, then the family moved to Raymondville, Missouri. Katie gave birth to two more children in Missouri and she died in 1890.

James then married Martha Elizabeth (Isabel) Shake at age nineteen on March 22, 1890. Young Isabel had the job of caring for James’ large family. He moved his new bride and the family to Licking, Missouri in Texas county. There the family lived for several years and grew to include more children. Isabel gave birth to seven children in eleven years. Two died when infants and one died when a young child.

James moved the family next to Kansas, where they were recorded in a 1905 population census near Dodge City. They settled in Meade County Kansas near the town of Plains. Isabel died there on September 13, 1908 and was buried in the Plains Cemetery.

Over the years James married three more times with each marriage ending in divorce. In 1910 he married Huldah St. John in Sullivan County Missouri. He next married May Pool in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1912. His final marriage was to Blanche Cole in July 1915 in Custer, South Dakota.

There is more to tell, but this bio is getting long. James ‘JBH’ Hamilton died July 8, 1936 at age 78 while living with one of his sons in the Nebraska Sandhills.
