OBITUARY: 8-YEAR-OLD BOY RUNS INTO PATH OF AUTO, KILLED – Paul Eugene Fields of Sweet Ireland Dies in Hospital This Morning
Paul Eugene Fields, 8-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Fields of the Sweet Ireland neighborhood, was fatally injured yesterday afternoon when he was struck by an automobile drive by Kenneth Graham, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Graham of Wayne township. He died at 5:50 o'clock this morning in the county hospital without regaining consciousness. The boy suffered injuries and was badly bruised. The accident occurred at 2 o'clock. He had dashed across the road from his home to the home of Mrs. Ida Merritt to ask the time. He then turned and dashed out of the yard and started across the road. Apparently he did not see the oncoming car. Graham saw the boy but not in time to avoid striking him. Graham stopped within a short distance and ran back to give what assistance he could. The boy was placed in an automobile and taken to the county hospital. His condition was such that death was expected on the way. Surviving are his parents, four sisters and three brothers: Mrs. William Sullivan of Waynesville, Doris, Mary Margaret, Anna Rae, Charles, Donald and Kenneth, all at home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the home and 2 o'clock at the Mount Healthy church. Burial will be made in the church cemetery. The body is at the Trimpe funeral home in Waymansville but tomorrow will be taken to the family home where the casket will be open after 4 o'clock.
Published in The Republic (Columbus, Indiana) February 22, 1937, page 1. Edited from the original to leave out details of injuries and the accident itself.
Note: Kenneth Graham grew up, may have been a veteran of World War II, married and had children. Sadly, he lost his life in a fire at his home on November 25, 1955, while trying to rescue his family. His wife and two young sons also lost their lives in the fire. They were survived by their three young daughters.
