Jack volunteered for service with the 1st Texas Cavalry on 28 April 1898, and served during the Spanish American War in Cuba. He was discharged on 14 Nov 1898.

Jack never married and was such a comfort to his mother. He traveled around the country quite a bit and was quite an outdoorsman who loved to hunt. He went on several hunting parties with friends from Weimer, Texas. He lived in Weimer and worked for the city as a night watchman. Once, while trying to take a gun from a young boy who was causing some trouble, the gun accidently discharged killing the young man. It was ruled as an accident. This was something very sad that Jack had to live with for the rest of his life.
