James died at Alliance Community Hospital. He was the son of Floyd and Alma (Olson) Ailes and lived in Alliance most of his life. A graduate of Alliance High School, Jim worked at Alliance Manufacturing for 46 years, retiring in 1986. He became a member of Conrad Masonic Lodge No. 271 on Nov. 7 1951. He was a member of the American Legion for 60 years and member of United Commercial Travelers and sang with the Barber Shop Quartet of Alliance.
Mr. Ailes was a corporal in the U.S. Marines, serving in the Marine Wing Service, squad 9 PMP from August 1942 to September 1945. He served in the South Pacific from March 1943 to November 1944 and also participated in the New Georgia operation, Treasury Bougainville and Consolidation, North Solomon Island.
Jim was a member of First Friends Church in Salem and the Y Men's Club. He enjoyed dancing, golfing, bowling, music, especially whistling, and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He was survived by his wife, a daughter, seven grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sissters, Betty Keller and Nancy Burson; twin sister, Martha Graspentine, and one son, Gregory Ailes.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Pete Fowler and the Rev. John Pierce co-officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions were asked to be made to First Friends Church of Salem, Music Department, or the Alliance Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice.
Arrangements were by Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home in Alliance.
