MONTROSE - Loyal A. Peterson, age 95, of Montrose, Colo., passed away April 3, 2011, at San Juan Living Center in Montrose. Born Aug. 5, 1915, to Cyrus and Ella Peterson in Kanorado, Kan., Loyal's family moved to eastern Colorado, and he grew up on the family farm. At age 17, he left home to begin his adventures in Yampa Valley, Colo., where he was a cowboy working on several cattle ranches. Loyal had many trades during his lifetime, including mining in Leadville and Telluride.

On Aug. 16, 1941, he married Edith Summers and farmed at Bennett and Peyton, Colo., before moving to the Western Slope in 1957. Loyal and Edith raised their family of six children on their Bostwick Park Ranch. Surviving family members include his children, Carolyn "Suzie" Steckel and Lois Kelly, both of Crawford, Sandra Lea (Dick) Zanett of Ouray, Colo., David (Evelyn) Peterson, Kathryn (Tom) Bieth and Gary (Kim) Peterson, all of Montrose; 18 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. In 1977, Loyal retired and moved to town, downsizing his farm, growing flowers and vegetables at their home north of Montrose until Edith's death in 2001. Loyal loved his garden and his rocking chair. Loyal was preceded in death by Edith and one granddaughter.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Grand View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice, in memory of Loyal Peterson. Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home, 802 E.
