In Sep 1918 John filed his WWI draft registration card when he and Alice were living at 26 East Britannia Street and working as a barber at 40 Washington Street in Taunton. At that time, he was described as having a medium height and build, blue eyes and light brown hair.

In 1942 when he re-filed with the draft of WWII he and Alice were at 15 James Street, their phone number was Taunton 3743, and he was self-employed at his residence. He was then 5'7" tall, weighed 142 pounds and had blue eyes, gray hair and wore glasses.

A brother and a sister died within two hours of each other Monday. They were Alice G. Smith, 76, of 9 Hodges Avenue, who died at her home after a one year's illness, and John F. Hickey, 80, of 14 King Street, who died suddenly two hours later in Morton Hospital. Hickey was taken to Morton Hospital by the police ambulance at 9:20 p.m. Sunday, from the home of his sister, where he had been visiting. Mrs. Smith, widow of William H. Smith, and Hickey, widower of Alice L. (Durnin) Hickey, were both born in Somerset, children of the late Michael and Catherine (Hickey) Hickey. Both had lived in this community most of their lives, and were educated in Taunton schools. Mrs. Smith, a communicant of St. Mary's Church, is survived by three sons, Terrance F. of Brockton and James F. and Joseph W. of this city; and by one daughter, Louise G. Smith of this city. Hickey, a retired barber and a member of the Taunton Lodge of Elks, was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church. He is survived by one son, John F. Hickey Jr., and by one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Jean L.) Paulson, both of this
city. Mrs. Smith and Hickey are also survived by two sisters, Agnes C. Hickey and Mrs. George (Louise) Clark of this city, and by several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith is also survived by two grandchildren and Hickey by 12 grandchildren.
