Mrs. Mary Maruska, one of the pioneer women of Ben Wade, was found dead last Thursday afternoon about two o'clock at her son's home which was being destroyed by fire when her son, Martin Maruska, reached home. She was lying immediately inside the door. Her clothes had been destroyed by the flames. Death was however thought not to have been caused by the flames, but it is more probable that she was smothered by the smoke.
The cause of the fire is unknown. It happened while Mr. Maruska was away from the house after a load of wood. He noticed the smoke from the house and hurried home, but arrived too late to relieve his mother.
Mrs. Maruska reached the old age of eighty-four years. She was born in Bohemia and was married there. The family came to this country some fifty years ago and located at New Prague where they remained about eight years. They then moved to this county and located near Lowry where she has since lived. During the past few years she has made her home with her son Martin Maruska about four miles north of Lowry.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday November first at the Reno Catholic Church. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Thomas Baldwin of Ray, N.D. and seven sons, James and Martin of this county, Joe of Crookston, Thomas of Holdingford, Frank of Washington, Albert of Ogema and Mike of Holmes City. All of the children except Frank where home for the funeral services.
