John Porter Johnston, Sr, was the son of Jacob Strauder Johns(t)on and Lucinda Riddle Johns(t)on. He was a veteran of the Confederacy, enlisting in Marion County, Alabama in January 1862. He had a younger brother, Henry Strauder Johns(t)on, who fought first for the Confederacy, and then enlisted with Union forces, and died during the War at Decherd, Tennessee. John Porter migrated with his family, shortly after the War, to De Soto Parrish, Louisiana, from Marion County, Alabama. He was part Native American through his mother's Riddle family. His mother's paternal grandfather was noted Tory, Captain William Riddle, who was hanged, during the American Revolution, on what is now known as Rittle's (Riddle's)Knob in North Carolina.
