Sylvester E. "Rusty" Strauss, age 78, of 4027 Goodwin Road, Manitowoc, died Friday evening, Sept. 2, 2005 at the Aurora Medical Center of Manitowoc County after a three week battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005 at St. Francis of Assisi-Waldo Site, Manitowoc. The Rev. Dan Felton and the Rev. Gerald Foley will concelebrate the Mass of Christian Burial with entombment to follow at the Knollwood Mausoleum, Highway 310, Manitowoc with military rites accorded by Amvets Post No. 99 of Manitowoc.

Rusty was born on Nov. 26, 1926 in the town of Cato, son of the late Frank and Johanna Pieschl Strauss. He grew up in Cato attending school at St. Mary's grade school in Clarks Mills. He served in the United States Army during World War II from Feb. 23, 1945 until Nov. 3, 1946 stationed in Hawaii.

On April 26, 1947, he was married to the former Shirley A. Chadek at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manitowoc. Shirley preceded Rusty in death on Jan. 31, 2005.

Rusty was an ironworker and operating engineer for Reidel Erecting for 15 years. Rusty and Shirley owned and operated Rusty Strauss Excavating Inc. for 30 years retiring on Oct. 1, 1995. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, the Manitowoc Yacht Club, Manitowoc Elks Club No. 687, and the Amvets Post No. 99 of Manitowoc.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law: Russell (Debra) Strauss of Manitowoc; two daughters and sons-in-law: Kristine (Dale) Gleichner of Manitowoc; Mary Lynn (Randy) Falvey of Francis Creek; seven grandchildren: Cassie Strauss, Dustin Strauss, Jennifer Strauss, Becky Gleichner, Patrick Gleichner, Jessica (Mark) Liska, Chrystal DeBauche and her fiance Travis Isley; one great grandchild: Austin Isley DeBauche; two sisters and two brothers-in-law: Rosalia (Dr. Jerald) Dragovich of Seattle, Wash.; Shirley (Doug) Emond of Mishicot; two brothers and four sisters-in-law: Ralph Strauss of Manitowoc; Robert (Lucille) Strauss of Manitowoc; Lorraine Strauss of Manitowoc; Rosemary Strauss of Manitowoc; Therese Strauss of Manitowoc; three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law: Mary Jane O'Hearn of Green Bay; Thelma (Lloyd) Alvord of Manitowoc; Edna Helwich of Manitowoc; his best friend: Harold Radandt of Manitowoc; and his special dog: Max; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends survive.

He was preceded in death by five brothers: Harold, Wilbert, Leroy, Bill and Francis; two sisters: Viola Hebert and Judy Schaller.

Relatives and friends may call at the Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. and on Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home led by Deacon Kenn Nelesen. A special thank you to Dr. Barylak and Dr. Theobald and the wonderful ladies of Aurora Medical Center of Manitowoc County 3 West Unit. To all the nurses, nursing assistants, hospice nurses, and Gail his social worker who extended their skills and loving hands to make Dad's last journey as easy as humanly possible on him and our family. We sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
