Sydney was the 6th of 9 children born to George
Chittick and Annie CAIRNEY Chittick. When she was a young girl she lost her leg from complications of an infection. She immigrated from Scotland in 1910 with her family and they settled in Colorado. There she met and married William Shaw and they had one child Donald G Shaw. They moved to Salinas, California and eventually divorced.

She worked as an elementary school teacher and a court stenographer to support herself and son. Later accomplishments included earning her Master's Degree at age 63 and traveling to Europe and the Orient.

I didn't know my biological grandfather, but remember Leo Trelford as my grandpa. Her third husband Jay Nicks was with her until her death at age 85 from a stroke.

She was an active member of Eastern Star and the Presbyterian Church.

She was my Nana and made a big impression on me. Sandra Shaw Branz
