Family tradition is that he was the ferry operator in Pomeroy, OH, and died of drowning. Some recall the tradition being that he was the ferry operator in Aberdeen, OH. The story is that some drunk Union Soldiers caused the ferry to overturn during a night crossing, whereupon he drowned.

However, some census records list him as a farmer.

Family tradition also is that John boarded a flatboat in Sharpsburg, PA, and travelled with 3 brothers and his father to St. Louis, MO, intending to continue further west.

Once they reached St. Louis, they heard of disease further west. One brother continued, and the rest returned to Ohio, disembarking at Pomeroy.

He appears in the Census for 1830 and 1840 in Nottingam Twp, Washington, PA. He also appears in the Census for 1850 in Alexander Twp, Athens, Ohio.

His wife apparently died in PA and is buried in Washington, PA.

The children did accompany John to Ohio.

Nancy Burt (Sergeant) 20 October 1820 – 9 September 1863
Mary Burt (WIngett) October 1822 - 04 December1906
Sarah Burt (Dillinger) 1833 - 20 February 1898
Lewis William Burt 17 January 1836 – 18 March 1923
Eliza Burt 17 July 1838 – 15 May 1856

Family tradition is that he is buried in St. John's Lutheran (later Episcopal) cemetery near Spring Road in Pomeroy/Salisbury. However, this cemetery has not been used since 1954, and is not maintained. The forest has reclaimed it, so headstones cannot be easily located.
