William Smith, was born around 1760, Smithfield, Johnston County, North Carolina. He first shows up on the 1809 Intruders "Sims Petition" List, for intruders into the Chickasaw Lands.
In order of the signatures below, I think are blood related:

Samuel Smith #187
Alexander Smith #188
Felps Smith #189
William Smith #190
Bryant Smith #191

He is on Census and Tax Lists up to 1830, and there is a probate record in Giles County, Tennessee dated 1836.
On 8 October 1829, William Smith made a Deed for all of his possions, to his son Felps Smith. It was recorded on 6 November 1829, at the Courthouse, in Limestone County, Alabama. Deed Book Volume #3, pages 529 - 530. This Deed was witnessed by Pleasant Smith, a Grandson of William Smith. And Bonapart Crabb, brother-in-law of Pleasant Smith.

Pleasant Smith was a son of Samuel Smith. And Bonapart Crabb was the son of Stephen Crabb and Mary Crabb.

"" I Think. This is not documented." My belief is that William Smith's full name was William Phelps Smith, as follows."

Felps Smith married Barshaby Cobb, 12 May 1778, Johnston County, North Carolina.

I believe that this Felps Smith is the same person as William Smith, who was heavily involved in the probate of his father John Smith Jr. Starting in 1793 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. And finally setteled in Knox County, Tennessee in 1804.

John Smith Jr. was a son of John Smith Sr. of Johnston County, North Carolina. I have seen varying dates of birth from 1712 to 1724. We do know that this is the same John Smith Jr. that died in Jefferson County, Tennessee in 1793.

The children of William Smith, as I know of them are as follows:]

Edith Smith, married James Britton Bailey.
Nancy Smith, married James Britton Bailey.
Samuel Smith b.1785 m. Sarah Jane Long.
Bryant Smith d.1814 @ The Battle of Horseshoe Bend.
John Smith b.1790, d.1873 Limestone County, Alabama
Phelps Smith b.1792, d.late 1840's Giles County, Tennessee.

The relationship of Edith and Nancy Smith, is proven by a letter written by Reid R. Smith, son of Samuel and Sarah Smith. to his first cousin Mary Polly Bailey, daughter of James Britton Bailey and Edith Smith Bailey. The letter was written in 1855, and is on the memorial for Reid R. Smith FAG #107973676.

Recently at Smith DNA Family Project, I have found descendants of Samuel & Sarah Smith, and also in the same group, descendants of John Smith Sr. and Jr.

So I a confidant that we are on the correct track.
