James A. Holliday, son of Susan and Alexander Holliday, was born at Martinsville, Ohio July 22, 1851, and departed this life at the home of his daughter Mrs. Daphna Mitchell in Republic , Kansas, February 16, 1938 at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 25 days.
In the year 1871 he came to Kansas with his parents, locating on a farm near Belleville.
He was united in marriage to Loretta Rockhold in 1877. To this union four daughters were born, one, Mintie, passing away in infancy.
In the early years of his married life he was associated in the furniture business in Culbertson, Nebr., later moving his family to Scandia, Kansas. In 1898 they came to Republic where he worked as a painter and decorator.
While in Culbertson they became members of the Methodist church, transferring their letters after moving to Republic.
After a long illness the wife and mother passed away May 29, 1920. Three years later he was united in marriage to Margaret DeClue of St. Joseph, Mo., she passed away in 1928.
His church work and associations were a source of much pleasure and he was a true and faithful worker for the remainder of his life.
He leaves to mourn his departure three daughters, Mrs. Lois Davies and Mrs. Daphna Mitchell of Republic and Mrs. Josephine Shrouf of Concordia; five grandchildren: Mrs. Audrey Brown of Omaha, Neb., Mrs. Maurine Chamberlin of Byron, Neb., Mrs. LaDean Gritten of Buhl, Idaho, Don Shrouf of Concordia and Roberta Mitchell of Republic. Several nieces and nephews and a large number of friends.
Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church in Republic on Saturday, February 19, 1938, with Rev. G. V. Parks in charge. Interment was made in the Lake cemetery north of Republic.
