GEORGE KARAFF HISTORY: George Karaff was the oldest child of twelve children born to Michael and Mary (Sisak) Karaff. He was born July 14, 1897 in Pekay, Iowa, a small mining town (camp) in south-western Mahaska County, Iowa. His parents moved to Hamilton, Iowa soon after his birth, and there he attended school. He lived in Hamilton until 1920, when he moved with his parents to a farm southeast of Kirksville, Adair County, MO. After his marriage to Florence Marquardt in 1925, he lived on farms both in Adair and Knox Counties. George was a coal miner, a farmer, and a carpenter; and was quite adept at all three. They lost their first child, Howard Andrew, when he was five years of age. Howard was a bright, happy little tow-headed boy, full of mischief and curiosity. His death grieved his parents deeply, and all those who had learned to love him. In 1931, their second son was born. Bobby was born with a birth defect and he was an epileptic. He was an endearing child, very affectionate. As he grew older he realized his handicap and learned to live with it. He worked at the Center for the Handicapped and was proud of his accomplishments. He was 41 when he died. George was a very caring man. He was a good father, and he loved all his family regardless of their successes or failures. He, with his wife and two sons, are buried in Highland Park Cemetery at Kirksville, MO. Written by Mabel Karaff
