"Tryonville, Jan 26 - Sherman Cook (sic) [Cooke], our venerable and respected townsman, passed away Friday afternoon, Jan 20, at the home of his daughter, Mrs George W Tryon, after an illness of about nine months, which began with a stroke of paralysis terminating with the grip and pneumonia. The deceased was a veteran of the civil war and probably the oldest one in Crawford county, being nearly 86 years of age. Obsequies were held Monday at the family residence. Following the services the remains were taken to Spartansburg for interment."
