MAJOR CASKIE DEAD - A CONFEDERAL VETERAN AND ORIGINAL CARTOONIST AND ILLUSTRATOR OF TEXAS SIFTING.
The people of Galveston and of other cities in Texas will learn with sorrow of the death of Major W.H. Caskie, which took place at 11 o'clock yesterday forenoon. He had not been strong in recent years, and on last Tuesday he was taken with a chill which resulted fatally.
Major Caskie was a man of gentle and dignified bearing, kind, sympathetic to a fault, and during the nearly twenty years he lived in Galveston drew around him a wide circle of friends. He was born in Richmond, Va., 64 years ago, and served with distinction in Pickett's brigade, Confederate State army. For over thirty years he illustrated for magazines, periodicals illustrator of comics for the Texas Siftings from the beginning of that publication at Austin, Tex., until it was removed to New York, when he severed his connections with it and removed to Galveston. Those were the palmy days of the Siftings. It was unique, and it obtained a wide popularity. Major Caskie was for some time interested in the publication of the Galveston Opera Glass, and for several years, he was office deputy under Sheriff Tiernan and he occupied a simular position under Sheriff Thomas at the time of his death. During the recent years he continued his pen and ink illustrations, and also painted a number of pictures depicting notable scenes in the Civil war in which he had participated. His wife and two children survive him. His funeral will take place from the family residence, 1006 Thirty-Seven street, this afternoon.
Comrade of Camp Magruder, United Conferate Vererans, will assemble at 1006 Thirty-seventh street, at 2:45 p.m. sharp to attend the funeral of Comrade W.H. Caskie.
H.A. Lebermann, Commander.
