Born Katherine Estrella Mister, the youngest of ten children, to William Taylor Mister and Jane Mills James Mister in Conwil, Carmarthenshire, Wales. She sailed to the New York from Cardiff Bay, Wales, on the SS Pembroke arriving on the 29th of September, 1873. The family then went to Platte Co., Nebraska. Six months after their arrival, her father was killed, leaving her mother widowed with nine children. Unable to care for them all, children where then separated and went to live with different families, either as servants, or foster/adopted children.
