William was the first born child of Edward Taylor Mister and Essex Eleanor Maria Garrety. It is believed that William was born at sea in the port of Calias, France. He was baptized on 2 November 1825, according to the RG 33: Foreign Registers and Returns, 1627-1960; Piece 050: Calais and St Omer: Baptisms, 1817-1847. His family may have been enroute to Germany, since his next three siblings were born in German as British Subjects. After the death of his father, he is shown living with his mother and siblings in Abergwilly, Carmarthenshire, Wales on the 1841 Census.

He married Jane Mills James on Aug. 23, 1856 at St. Peter's Church in Carmarthenshire, Wales. He was listed as a Landed Proprietor, Squire, Gentleman and blind on the birth records of their children, and in the 1861 census. In the 1871 census he is listed as a farmer with 1 laborer. The family arrived in the US on Sep. 29, 1873 and moved directly to Platte Center, NE. He died six months later, and family tradition states that he was murdered by a Russian farmer that he was working for, when they got in a fight over his pay, and his body was never found. His wife ran a death notice in the May issue of "Yr Haul" in Carmarthen.

He left his wife a widow with nine children. Most of the children were farmed out to other families as servants. According to family members, John, wsa adopted by a family , but died of diptheria in 1879.
