Elizabeth was born Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of James and Nancy (Bixler) Hamilton, both of whom are buried at Goshen Church, south of Morgantown, West Virginia. She was married to Evander Finnell of Morgantown for 27 years, and together they had seven children. Evander died in 1900. In 1927, Elizabeth married Luke Shaw. She died at Martin's Ferry, Ohio.
