WOMAN FOUND DEAD SITTING AT WINDOW
MRS. MARY D. SHIRK KILLED BY FUMES FROM GAS STOVE.
Discovered This Morning By Neighbor in Life-life Attitude - Her Sewing in Her Lap - Had Evidently Died Wednesday Night - Daughter of the late Bishop Kohr.
Mrs. Mary D. Shirk, an aged and well known lady of this city was found dead in her apartment at No. 245 East New street, on Thursday. She occupied several rooms on the second floor of the house, and lived alone, the other part of the house being occupied by a family named Fegley.
Some time during the morning a neighbor saw her sitting at one of the windows. She seemed to have a peculiar look about her face, and it was thought that something was wrong. Her room was entered and she was found sitting on a chair by the window, dead, with her sewing in her lap. She had died from asphyxiation, caused by gas, with which the room was filled.
She used a small gas stove for doing her cooking, and she must have turned it down so low that it blew out. As she had lost her sense of smell she must have been gradually overcome until her death resulted. It is believed that she met her death on Wednesday evening. Her newspaper was at the door, and she was in the habit of getting it along about five o'clock. Wednesday evening she did not get it. Coroner Witmer found that she died from inhaling gas.
The deceased was 72 years of age, and the widow of the late David O. Shirk. She was a daughter of the late Bishop John Kohr, of the Mennonite church, and a brother of the present bishop of the same name. Dr. J. K. Shirk was her only child, and the body was taken to his home, from which the funeral will take place. The sisters and brothers of the deceased, besides Bishop Kohr, are: Jacob D. Kohr, of Dillerville; Mrs. Henry Ryder and Mrs. Amos K. Herr, of this city, and Mrs. Annie Huber, of Bart township.
