Born Maria Vrbska 12 Sep 1859 according to church records,

Parents: Josef Vrbsky and Anna Drda Vrbsky
Husband: Wencil Skleba, divorced in 1899

She farmed her parents farm that she purchsed from the family. Later she moved to Crete before she died. She was fondly remembered as a loving grandmother by her grandchildren.

Marie Skleba, (nee Vrbsky), was born September 12, 1857, in Zkpv, Czechoslovakia, and passed away at her home in Crete after a long illness, August 17, 1937, at 10:25 p.m. at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 5 days.

She came to America with her parents at the age of 19 years. The family settled on a farm in Saline County. She married to Wencil Skleba, in 1879, and they settled, on a farm four miles north of Wilber.
Here they endured all the hardships of the early pioneers. Mrs. Skleba was an industrious woman and because of her effort they were able to give their children a better start in life than they had themselves. They had three children, two sons, and one daughter.

She moved to Crete in 1919, from her farm southeast of Crete, where her son James now lives. She was a resident of Saline County for sixty years.

Two son's mourn the passing of a good mother, Joseph of Crete, and James of Wilber. There are six grandchildren and one great grandchild, and one sister, Mrs. Jos. Formanek of Wilber. Her husband preceded her in death thirteen years ago, and her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Skolil, passed away August 16, 1936.

Her parents, two sisters, and one brother also preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at the Sokol auditorium at Crete, Friday, August 29, 1937. Rev. K. O. Zavadil had charge of the services, assisted at the grave by the J.C.D. lodge of which she was a member for many years. Burial was at the Bohemian National Cemetery, west of Wilber.
