Frank Rank Chilton Times February 1916

Village Treasurer Frank Rank, died at his home in this city last Wednesday afternoon, February 2, following a stroke of apoplexy.

Decedent was born in Germany 1839. In the early 50's his father came to America and settled at Francis Creek in the town of Kossuth. In 1856 Frank accompanied his mother to America to join the father. In 1864, Mr. Rank was married to Magdalena Herman who died some years later. In 1882 the family came to Brillion and in 1892 he married the wife who now survives him, her maiden name being Catherine Miller.

While a resident of Kossuth, Mr. Rank early took an interest in public affairs and for some time served as assessor. When he came to Brillion he went into the saloon business, retiring from there a year ago. In 1897 he was elected Village Treasurer and had held that office since with credit.

As a saloon keeper he was unique in that he had most decided objections to all forms of disorderliness and never had any hesitancy in showing it. He closed his place at an early hour every evening. While it is impossible for a saloon keeper to avoid at least an occasional outbreak in his place of business, Mr. Rank so thoroughly disliked it that the temptation of nickels never induced him to tolerate disorderliness with patience and this class of business gradually drifted away to more congenial surroundings. Realizing the loss this meant to him in business way and sympathizing with his advancing years, his fellow citizens steadily continued him in the office of village treasurer and he always discharged his duties with care and integrity.

He is survived, besides his widow, by two sons, Peter and George, and six daughters, Mrs. Chas Jensen, Mrs. Jac. Blau, Mrs. Emil Darsow, Mrs. Ed Engel Mrs. Henry Huls and Miss Frieda Rank. The funeral will take place tomorrow at the house, services being conducted by Rev. Elske.

In conclusion, we can pay our deceased fellow citizen no higher tribute than to record the fact that he was one of the saloon keepers who recently gave their promise to the community in the most solemn and public manner not to sell liquor to minors or intoxicated persons and he kept that promise. His word was as good as his bond.
