William Dobson was born on June 17, 1840 in York Township, Medina County, Ohio to David Dobson and Elizabeth Lance. William's parents had been married in Medina County on September 26, 1839.

In the 1860 U.S. Census, William was living with his stepbrother (Jacob Miller) and his stepbrother's family.
In the 1870 U.S. Census, William was living with his wife (Sylvina) and his oldest child (Leon Dupre Dobson) and he gave his birthplace as Ohio, and there was no parents' birthplaces information required on that form.
In the 1880 U.S. Census, William gave his birthplace as Ohio, and both his parents' birthplaces as Ohio.
In the 1900 U.S. Census, William gave his birthplace as Ohio and both his parents' birthplaces as Pennsylvania.
In 1910 U.S. Census, he gave his birthplace as Ohio and both his parents' birthplaces as Ohio.
In the 1920 U.S. Census, his final one, he gave his birthplace as Pennsylvania, and both his parents' birthplaces as Pennsylvania.
On William Dobson's death certificate, William's birthplace is Lafayette Township, Medina County, Ohio. His father, David Dobson's birthplace is listed as the same, while his mother's is listed as Doylestown, Summit [should be Wayne] County, Ohio. William's son, Hiley, was the informant.

William fought in Colonel [later U.S. President] James A. Garfield's Regiment, the 42nd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.), in Company B. He enlisted on August 11, 1862 at the age of 22 years and was discharged with a disability on September 22,1863.

During William Dobson's enlistment, he was in the same infantry Company, at the same time, as Jasper Newton Richards, the brother of his future wife, Mrs. Sylvina Richards Edmonds, whom William later wed, after the war, on October 4, 1866 in Medina County. Jasper N. Richards died on Feb. 16, 1863 at Young's Point, Louisiana, during the Civil War. Jasper enlisted on August 20, 1862 at the age of 19 years.
William Dobson was also in the same Company as William Wheeler (#63593294), whose sister was Mary Wheeler who had married the brother of William Richards, the father of Sylvina Richards Dobson.
Sylvina's oldest brother William H. Richards was also in that same Infantry Company and he died at Ashland, Kentucky on February 28, 1862. William had enlisted on September 22, 1861, at the age of 20 years.

William Dobson married "Sylvina Edmands," a Civil War widow, who had been born Sylvina Richards.
Sylvina Richard's father, William H. Richards, was a stepbrother to William Dobson's mother, Elizabeth Lance, whose widowed father (Abram Lance, Sr) had married in 1832, William H. Richard's mother, Mary McCormick Richards, also widowed. William and "Lavina" had 3 sons together: Leon, Milton and Hiley. [Note: On Milton's birth record, the name given for his mother was Sylvina Edmonds.]

Their two oldest sons, Leon and Milton, both died of Diphtheria in 1883, at the ages of 14 and 11 years, respectively.
