Donald Albert Arndt, 71, of Sherrills Ford passed away Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.
Born April 14, 1935 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Albert Donald Arndt and the late Lois Sherrill Arndt. His love of softball and outstanding softball career spanned more than 32 years (1957-1988) playing for Howard's Furniture and Howard's Western Steer. He was mainly a pitcher, but did catch and play first base. He was named to 12 ASA AllAmerican teams, named MVP of the 1972 Men's Open National Championship and Outstanding Pitcher of the 1983 Super National Championship and participated in 19 ASA National Championships. Mr. Arndt was a member of five ASA national championship teams in 1973, 1974, 1981, 1983 and 1984; and he led the 1964 ASA National Championship in homers with ten. It is estimated that he hit more than 7,000 home runs during his career. He was voted into the USSSA National Hall of Fame in 1987 and the ASA National Hall of Fame in 1992 and was inducted on Jan. 30, 1993. He was recognized not only for his outstanding contribution to the sport of softball, but for his sportsmanship, integrity, and character demonstrated during his career. Don was a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church in Terrell.
In addition to his parents, a brother, Harold Arndt, and a sister, JoAnn Eades, preceded him in death.
Mr. Arndt is survived by his wife, Nancy Parker Arndt of the home; son, David Arndt and wife, Sandy, of Denver; daughter, Diane Arndt of Sherrills Ford, brother, Elmer Ray Arndt of Sherrills Ford; sister, Patty Jones of Catawba; two grandsons, Garrett Arndt and Cameron Arndt and two granddaughters, Dana Arndt and Allison Arndt.
The funeral service was held on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. at Rehobeth United Methodist Church in Terrell with Dr. Robert Kerr and Rev. Grady Barringer officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
