Eldest son and heir to Sir Hugh de Stafford and Philippe de Beauchamp. Grandson of Sir Ralph de Stafford and Margaret de Audley, Sir Thomas de Beauchamp and Katherine de Mortimer.

Ralph was a knight of the household and in the King Richard II's army on the way to Scotland, when he was murdered between York and Bishopsthorpe by the King's half-brother, Sir John de Holland. The earldom passed to his younger brother, Thomas. His father died the following year on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

Sir Ralph was unmarried, buried at Langley.

His birth year is possibly 1367 based on Wikipedia statement: "One modern historian has suggested that Ralph was the closest friend the young King Richard II had at court; they were the same age and Ralph appears to have been "a bright and promising" courtier. Richard was born in 1367.
