4th Earl of Stafford, third son of Sir Hugh de Stafford and Philippe de Beauchamp. Grandson of Sir Ralph de Stafford and Margaret de Audley, Sir Thomas de Beauchamp and Katherine de Mortimer.

William received his title from his elder brother, Thomas, who died in 1392 when William was fourteen, and a ward of Thomas of Woodstock, 1st Duke of Gloucester.

William died at Pleshey at age nineteen, and was buried at Tonbridge, Kent with his grandparents. His title was passed to his younger brother, the youngest son, Edmund, who died at age twenty-five with male issue.
