Man and Wife Killed
Mr. and Mrs. William S. Skolfield were instantly killed this afternoon when their automobile was struck by a Maine Central freight train at Cook's Crossing, near the Redstone district of this township. They were completing a
4,000 mile automobile tour of the country, having left California last April and were bound for Weld, Maine where Mr. Skolfield had a summer camp. Their motor car, a sedan, was loaded with trunks and camping equipment, and the view of the approaching train was partly obscured by underbrush and trees. The locomotive struck the sedan with terrific force, reducing it to a tangled mass of wreckage. Practically every bone in the bodies of the two
victims was broken, but their faces were not mutilated.
Mr. and Mrs. Skolfield had been visiting points of interest in the White Mountains for a week, and up to yesterday were accompanied by Mrs. Skolfield's daughter, Mrs. W. C. Boeck of Boston, and the latter's husband.
The Boecks reside at 77 Audubon Road, Back Bay. They left the Skolfields at Meredith (New Hampshire) and went back to Boston by train. His death record shows that at the time of his death he was a resident of Monrovia, California, and his occupation was listed as contractor and builder. Margery Lena Ross was born 11 August 1873 in Phillips, Maine; died 28 June 1941 in Berkeley,
California. She was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips, Maine. She was a member of Sierra Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, in Berkeley, and the
First Congregational Church there. Her death certificate lists her as a widow. The child of William Stanwood-5 Skolfield, Jr. and Margery Lena Ross was:
