Found in The State 23 October 1977: John Phillip Bethea, 78, of 2910 Heyward St., a retired employee of Standard Oil Co., died Friday in a Columbia nursing home. Born in Latta, he was a son of the late Julius Neverly (how it is spelled in the obit) and Carrie Sessions Bethea. He was a member of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ruth B. Smith of Mullins and Mrs. Olive B. Hall of Burlington, N. C. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Elmwood Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Thomas F. Matthews Sr.
