Ralph Joseph Schmidt passed away Saturday
afternoon December 17, 1977 at the age of
71 years.
Mr. Schmidt suffered a heart attack while
driving his car at the west edge of Frankfort
on west 2nd Street.
Ralph Joseph being the fifth child of John
Martin and Mary E. (McQuaid) Schmidt
was born in the St. Bridget community,
Marshall County, Kansas, February 21,
1906.
Mr. Schmidt was a farmer most of his life.
He lived on a farm in Clear Creek town-
ship near Axtell, Kansas until 1937 when
he and his family moved to Missouri where
he farmed for a number of years. Along with
farming he spent a number of years as a
sheep shearman and the maker of sorghum
and molasses. He returned to Marshall
County in 1948 where they resided on a farm
south of Home City, Kansas until 1966 when
they bought a home and moved to Frankfort,
Kansas.
He was also a mechanic and was of a great
help to many doing various jobs and doing
handy man work.
Ralph Schmidt was the grandson of Mathias
Schmidt, a pioneer shoemaker of Pennsy-
lvania of Dutch origin who settled in
Seneca Kansas in 1870.
Ralph was united in marriage to Mary Rose
Dalsin, January 21, 1931 at the St. Bridget
Catholic Church near Axtell, Kansas. To
this union was born two sons and three
daughters.
He is survived by his wife Mary, of the home;
his children, Mary Jane Foley, Marysville,
Kansas, Joan Yarger, Centralia, Kansas,
William Schmidt, Home City, Kansas,
Pauline Henderson, Lincoln, Nebraska and
Ralph John Schmidt, Lawrence, Kansas.
He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren,
two great-grandchildren; his brothers and
sisters, Nora Koelzer, Marysville, Kansas
Cecelia Welch, Topeka, Kansas, Hugh
Schmidt, Frankfort, Kansas, Rose Rilinger,
Goff, Kansas, Lebert Schmidt, Buhl, Idaho,
Lawrence Schmidt, Harlan Iowa, Alice Cain,
Axtell, Kansas, and Paul Schmidt, Buhl,
Idaho.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec-
ember 20, 1977 at 10:30 a.m. at the
Annunciation Catholic Church in Frank-
fort, Kansas with Father Leo Cooper
officiating.
Serving as pallbearers were Gerald
Ladner, Walt Foley, Kenneth Burton,
Harold Keck, Lloyd Easton and William
J. Kennedy.
