JOSEPH BARRY DIES AFTER SHORT ILLNESS
Prominent Grand Coteau Citizen Succumbs from Serious Attack Pneumonia
GRAND COTEAU, La, March 6,-
John Joseph Barry, seventy-three years old, a native of this place died at his residence near here Tuesday night after a five days illness with pneumonia. He was President of the local unit, Catholic Laymen Association of Louisiana and always took an active part in religious and civic matters. He is survived by his widow, ten children: Carroll of Los Angeles, Calif., Marcy, Rupert, Redmond, of Beaumont, Texas, J. S. of Grand Coteau, Thomas of Lafayette, La., Emeritte (Mrs. John T. Doherty) of Port Arthur, Texas, Cecilia of Grand Coteau, Gertrude (Mrs. W. N. Chapman) of Houston, Texas and Johanna (Mrs. Aloysius Castille) of Shreveport, La., and twenty-five grand-children one of whom, Wallace Barry, a Jesuit studying for the priest-hood in Hillyard, Washington one brother, Mayor E. V. Barry of Grand Coteau, and one sister Marie (Mrs. Fred Mouton) of Grand Coteau. The funeral services were held Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church before a large concourse of people. Rev. Emile J. Baehr, S.J., Pastor officiated and also preached. He said he lost a very valuable parishioner and a personal friend. He beseeched his congregation to follow in the footsteps of the deceased as his life was an example to be followed. The pallbearers were: Marcy, Rupert, Redmond, J. S. and Thomas Barry and Ben Olivier. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.
