SHOT IN THE ABDOMEN

GEO. STILES BADLY HURT.

The shooting Occurred About 6:30 O'Clock Last Evening

Last evening, at 6:30, George Steil was shot in the abdomen while scuffling with John O'Connell in the latter's saloon. Steil went in the saloon in company with another party. He got into a dispute with O'Connell, and the latter ordered him out. He refused to go. The latter went behind the bar and got a revolver. A scuffle ensued, and it was discharged. The bullet went through Steil's overcoat and lodged in his abdomen. He was assisted to his home when medical aid was summoned, but the bullet could not be located. He is in critical condition.

O'Connell has never been considered quarrelsome and generally tried to keep an orderly place of business.

AN AWFUL DEATH

Geo. Steil Smothered in a Well at Alex. Peddie's

Yesterday afternoon George Steil was smothered in a 30-foot well he was sinking at Alex Peddie's residence. Monday he exploded some dynamite in the bottom of it to blast out a rock. Yesterday about three o'clock, he place his foot in a loop at the end of a rope and was let down to make an examination. Soon after he shouted to Wm. Hester and Dan Smith, who were at the top, to pull him up. They did so, but when about eight from the top, the rope broke, and he fell to the bottom. It is thought that the gas from the dynamite smothered him soon after he spoke and that, his muscles relaxing, his body became doubled, causing it to clog in the eighteen-inch hole, thus breaking the rope. Every effort to recover the body proved fruitless. Carl Newman was lowered to try to grab it, but the foul air was too much for him, and he narrowly escaped suffocation. At last work was commenced to dig to the bottom, several working all night.

The result is most unfortunate for the family of the deceased. He leaves a wife and six small children. George has had many ups and downs in life, but he had been making considerable money for several months, and he was working hard and faithfully to get onto his feet again. Those who lived near him say that he was one of the best of neighbors and that he was always kind and generous to hie wife and family. He met with a sad death. Mrs. Steil and her little children have the sympathy of all.

LATER: The body was recovered at 5 this morning and is in good condition. He was standing erect with his hands raised above his head.
