He attended school in Maple, WI. As a young man he worked on the family farm and sailed on the ore boats of Lake Superior, worked for the Great Northern Railroad and spent many years working in East Grand Forks, MN. He was one of the unsung heroes who make things work. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and camper. He loved to dance, sing and play the guitar and was one of the Great Northern Trio years ago and sang with the Grand Forks Barber Shop Chorus. He and wife Bonnie spent many winters in Arizona.
In addition to his wife Bonnie, Ruben is survived by sisters Irene Brazill of Superior, WI and Elvie Agacki of Lakeside, WI; his children Sheilla (David) Snell of Americus, GA, Bonnie (Earle) Turvey of Colorado Springs, CO, Gary (Bev) Winkka of Bemidji, MN, Douglas Winkka of Rapid City, SD, Jay (Jane) Johnson of Grand Forks, ND, Jayne (Steve) Nelson of East Grand Forks, MN , Jeff (Kathy) Johnson of Park Rapids, MN, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Matt, Eino and Oscar Winkka, and sisters, Senja Keller, Mae Schuler, Helen Johnson, Elsie Johnson, Aileen Gadda, and Lillian Frank.
Ruben Winkka was a good man, quick with a joke and always ready with a song. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.
