Helen Mabel Johnson, 90, of Lakeside died Sunday, Aug 29, 2010, in St Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. She was born March 22, 1920, to Hemminki and Majya (Ammesmake) Winkka in Lakeside and was a lifelong Lakeside area resident.

She attended Maple Corner School. Helen married her husband Harvey on April 27, 1940 and celebrated 65 years of marriage before he passed away on Nov 24, 2005. She graduated from nursing school in 1950. She was employed as an LPN at Parkland Health Facility before her retirement. She had also previously been employed with Middle River Health Facility and briefly at Superior Memorial Hospital.

Helen recently enjoyed her 90th birthday party in Lakeside with her family and so many of her friends. She loved dancing, singing and composing lullabies for her children and grandchildren. She also loved cooking for family and friends.

In addition to her husband Harvey, Helen is preceded in death by a son Ronald; five sisters, Senja Keller, Elsie Johnson, Lillian Frank, her twin sister Mae Schullar and an infant sister, Ailia; three brothers, Matt, Oscar and Eino Winkka.

Helen is survived by one daughter, Cheryl (Scott) Haworth, Hawthorne; two sons, Roger, South Range and Robert (Kathy), Lakeside; 10 grandchildren, Denise (Gene) Rajala, Diane (Aaron Amys) Essen, Darlene Johnson, Becken (Jeff) Nipp, Erick (Rhonda) Johnson, Kevin (Lisa) Johnson, Renee (Jeff) Priem, Shannon (George) Snyder, Nathan Haworth and Miah Haworth; 16 great-grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, Riley, Elizabeth, Giovanna, Jeffrey, Bryce, Trevor, Megan, Nicholas, Senja, Jackson, Molly, Noah, Emma and Addison; three sisters, Aileen Gadda, Superior, Elvie Agacki, South Range and Irene Brazil, South Range; one brother, Reuben (Bonnie) Winkka, Northern Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers for the service will be her grandsons, Justin Johnson, Ryan Rajala, Nathan Haworth, Nick Essen, Jeffrey Priem and Riley Rajala. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery.
