QUEENSBURY — Robert "Bob" A. Bernhoft, 82, of Queensbury, passed away Wednesday morning, Sept. 4, 2013, at his home.

Born April 4, 1931, in Peekskill, N.Y., he was the eldest son of the late Arthur and Gladys (Cole) Bernhoft.

Bob graduated from Fayetteville High School, at which he excelled in football, basketball and track, and was Student Council president his senior year. Bob attended Houghton College for one year before joining the U.S. Navy at age 19. He served as a hospital corpsman during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan on a converted destroyer and then on an APA 213 amphibious personal attack ship, being honorably discharged in August 1954.

After his military service, Bob attended Syracuse University. While working full-time nights in a factory, he graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in education, master's degree in education and Doctorate of Education and Counseling. He followed Syracuse athletics faithfully and was one of the "Orange's" biggest fans.

For seven years, he taught high school social studies and coached football in the Syracuse area. He then moved his family to Toledo, Ohio, where he joined the University of Toledo staff, teaching guidance and counseling for six years. The next 20 years, Bob was in private practice specializing in counseling psychology, when he met Jay Cooper, his best friend, colleague and golfing buddy. While in private practice, he owned Vintage Farms, where he raised, trained and bred several champion Morgan Horses.

After retirement, Bob and his wife, Betty, returned to the mountains of upstate N.Y., so he could once again pursue his passion for downhill skiing, which he did well into his 70s. In Dec. 2001, he was a relay torchbearer for the Salt Lake Winter Olympics.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Marilyn Carlisle.

Interment, with military honors, will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Saratoga.

Condolences may be mailed to Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804, or emailed through www.bakerfuneralhome.com.
