Garrett, Doris Bearden, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 14, 2011 with family at her side, including all seven of her children. She lived an amazing American life. She was born to Mitchell and Murl Bearden on November 6, 1922 in McComb, Mississippi, and lived all around the country, serving the nation in World War II, raising her family, and working to help the unemployed find jobs.

She is a graduate of Tylertown High School in Mississippi. She enlisted in the WAVES in the United States Navy on November 7, 1944. Stations she served included: ONOP, New Orleans, LA.; USNTSCH. (WR) Bronx, NY; NTS, Stillwater OK; and NAS, Corpus Christi, TX.

While in the Navy she met her husband, William C. Garrett Jr. a Navy pilot, when she hitched a ride on his plane, a North American SNJ, to visit her mother in New Orleans, LA. It was love at first sight. They were married on November 1, 1945 in the Chapel at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas. The military couple toured the country, living in Corpus Christi, TX; Pensacola, FL; Chincoteague, VA; San Diego, CA; and Alexandria, VA. They ultimately settled in Anaheim, CA in 1957. Doris Garrett began working for the State of California in 1970. She worked as an Employment Development Officer II, and reveled in finding people jobs that would match their talents and feed their families. She retired in 1985.

She was a magical woman, dedicated to her husband Bill, and a powerful inspiration to her children. She also inspired future generations. Known as "Granny" to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren she taught them to play "horse" on the basketball court, honor their families, and live lives of integrity.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brothers, Holmes and Michael Bearden; and her brother and sister-in-law, William and Helen Krom. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Robert Baker; her sister-in-law Joan Bearden; her seven children, Michele, William III, Janet, John, David, Joseph and Helen; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She will be sorely missed.

Viewing will be held Friday, March 18th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Hilgenfeld Mortuary, 120 East Anaheim, CA, 92805. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, March 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Eastside Christian Church, 2505 Yorba Linda Blvd, Fullerton, CA 92831. Following the funeral service she will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, 7845 Santiago Canyon Road, Orange CA 92869.
