Death Claims Former Resident

A group of relatives from this vicinity and Alcester attended the funeral of Mrs. C. J. Carlson at Clark, S. D., on Friday. Those driving up were Miss Sophia Johnson of Sioux City, who came up and went with Mr. and Mrs. Gust Carlson of Alcester, Mr. and Mrs. Ivar Stenstrom, Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Johnson.

Mrs. C. J. Carlson was a resident of Big Springs many years ago and has a number of relatives living here she was formerly Miss Hannah Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johan Johnson, whose home was a mile and a half south of Big Springs. She was born in Narke, Sweden, February 9, 1878 and came to America with her parents when she was 14 years old. The family settled on the farm south of Big Springs and she spent her young womanhood here in this vicinity. In her youth she was converted and united with the Big Springs Baptist church. On June 14, 1900, she was united in marriage to Charley J. Carlson, and on the day of her burial they would have been married just 40 years. About 34 years ago they moved from Big Springs to a farm near Clark, S. D., and have resided there up until the time of her death.

Mrs. Carlson had been in poor health for a number of years and for this past year, had been bedfast most of the time, so death released her from her suffering when she passed away at her home near Clark on June 10 1940, at the age of 62 years, 4 months and 1 day. She was a kind wife and mother, and was esteemed and loved by all who knew her. She is mourned by her husband, C. J. Carlson; one, son, Edwin, of Clark, and four daughters, Mrs. Esther Adolph, Edna at home, Mrs. Frances Bush of Waterloo, Iowa, and Alice, at Sherwood, Oregon. A baby daughter died in infancy. She also leaves four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; one brother, Joseph E. Johnson of Riverside, Calif., and five sisters, Mrs. Gust Carlson of Alcester, Miss Sophia Johnson of Sioux City, Mrs. Arnold Ericson of Isanti, Minn., and Mrs. A. V. Peterson and Miss Hildur Johnson of Sherwood, Ore. Her father, mother, two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at the home on Friday afternoon, then at the Methodist church in Clark, with Rev. Thompson of Watertown in charge of the rites, and burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery at Clark, S. D. Big Springs friends sympathize with the bereaved husband and children in the loss of their loved one.
