Henry Jason Helms is the son of Charles Ingram Helms (b. 1823) and his first wife, Elizabeth J., known as Eliza (b. c 1820). Henry married Francis Marion Margaret King about 1865 in Coffee County, AL. By 1870 they were living next door to his older brother, James Allen Helms, in Rose Hill, Covington County, AL. In the mid 1880s they lived in Santa Rosa County, FL. But by 1888-1889 they had returned to AL, showing up on the 1900 Census in Escambia County, AL, Macedonia Precinct.

Henry and Francis had 12 or more children, but less than half lived to adulthood.

By the time of the 1900 Census, enumerated on June 4, 1900, Francis had borne 12 children but only 7 were still alive on the date of the census. There were 6 known daughters shown at home with them, and 1 son. At least 5 other children had died before 4 June 1900. Some in the household with them in 1900 died young as well.
