Ella was about four years old when the John B. Hardeman family moved to Henderson. She grew up in a house which stood where the present Freed-Hardeman University library is located. She attended Georgia Robertson Christian College which was a predecessor of Freed-Hardeman University. She met Robert Hedge Porch of Bakerville while he was attending National Teachers' Normal and Business College and they were married July 14, 1911 at the home of A. G. Freed.
