Bertha Becker, school child and older daughter of Henrich Becker, steam-miller in Serbin town, and Helene Kasper, died at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, 31 August 1873 and was buried the next day in St Paul's Cemetery, Serbin, Texas. There was singing at the grave and Pastor Kilian gave a blessing. Bertha was nine years, eight months and 19 days old when she died from congestive fever. She is survived by her parents, one brother and one brother. (Grave diggers were August Miertschin, Andreas Miertschin, Gottlieb Liberty, and Carl Zawicki.)

The following obituary was originally written in German by Pastor Jan Kilian and translated into German by Weldon Mersiovsky, Texas Wendish Heritage Society:

We cherish today an honored memory. It has pleased the Lord, a week ago today at 3:30 p.m., to call from the world Bertha, older daughter of the marriage of Henry Becker, steam miller in Serbin Town and his wife Helene née Kasper. Her pale body received a Christian burial last Monday with songs and blessings at the grave.

She was born in New Ulm on 12 December 1864 and received in her holy baptism the Christian name Bertha. She was sickly and in poor health from birth but she started in the first grade in school and enjoyed both it and the second grade until she became sick with a fever eight days ago last Thursday. She passed away on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 at the age of nine years, eight months, and ten days.

May the Lord comfort the bereaved father and mother; the bereaved brother August and the bereaved sister Pauline; a bereaved grandmother Anna, widow of John Pampel and her children; and all friends and relatives near and far.

Heartfelt thanks to all the friends who gave gifts, the merchant Andrew Kappler for transporting the body; the grave diggers and the mourners for the last demonstrated honor and love.

To her honored memory we will sing afterwards the Hymn 415, “I Want To Go There With Joy.”

But you, o eternal God, be praised and thanked for all the grace and mercy you have demonstrated to the deceased in her life, suffering and death. Grant to the buried body a gentle rest in the grave and at the last day a joyful resurrection and the eternal salvation of the soul in your heavenly kingdom. Comfort and bring joy in every way to the grieving survivors through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, our Lord. Amen
