William Tipton "Bill" Blanken, 78, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, April 9, 1999, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

A native of Spartanburg County, he was son of the late William Tipton and Mae Gosnell Blanken.

A member of Arcadia Free Will Baptist Church, he served three years with the Civilian Conservation Corp in Oregon and in Sumter National Forest.

A veteran of World War II, having served with the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific, he was engaged in four major battles, the last one being Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Star medals.

He retired from Reeves Brothers, Fairforest Plant, after 35 years of service, was a charter member of Arcadia Rescue Squad, and a member of the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Ida (Cooper) Blanken; two daughters, Sandra Malone of Greer and Dianne Anderson of Arcadia; two sons, William T Blanken III of Fairforest and Ronald Blanken of the home; a sister Lillian Guy of Spartanburg; two brothers, J.T. "Bud"Blanken of Fairforest and John Blanken of Boiling Springs; and four grandchildren.

The family received friends 7:00 to 9:00 Saturday, April 10, 1999 at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel.

Services were held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 11, 1999 at the funeral home, conducted by the Revs. David Carter and Kevin Smith. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials could be made to Hospice Special Needs Fund, 120 Heywood Ave., Spartanburg 29302.
