(Source: Carlene Warner via misc e-mail communication with Ron Yates) She is listed in the 1870 U.S. Census as being born in Ohio, however, family records and marriage license list Emma's birthplace as Madison County, Iowa. 1870 US Census- Madison County, Madison, Iowa, Film M593, reel 407. Page 5, dwelling 34, family 34: Klingman, Henry, 45 , farmer, PA; Elizabeth, 43, at home, MD; Marshall, 18, farmer, OH; Mary, 15, at home, OH; Charles, 13, OH; Edwin, 8, OH; John, 3, OH; Emma, 2, OH; Smith, Jennie, 35, housekeeper, OH. Request for a death certificate from the State of Indiana produced no results. Records were checked from 1902 to 1908, based on family records listing her death date. Request from Crawford County, Illinois also proved futile. Family records state Emma Clingman died two days after the birth of her last child at age 36. The infant died at birth and is buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

(Source: Carlene Warner via misc e-mail communication with Ron Yates) I've continued to research and have found the actual location of Emma Clingman Laswell's burial site. She is buried close to David Sherman Laswell's parents in Pleasant Ridge (Tick Ridge) Cemetery near English, Crawford County, Indiana. Earlier records had erroneously had her buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana. Her grave stone is just a homemade cement one--barely legible, but definitely hers. Also near her grave is a simple marker for Emma's and Sherman's child, Muriel Laswell, as well as the infant who died two days before Emma. We visited there in September, 2002 and I took photos of all the Laswell grave stones. There are many, as well as Yates' stones. Here is a photo of David Morton Laswell and Mariah Catherine Curl Laswell's stone. David Sherman Laswell is buried at Grandview Cemetery in Terre Haute in the same plot with my grandparents, Alma Ruth Laswell Barbee and Alonzo Burnett Barbee.

(Marriage Certificates 1830-1922 Knox County IL Clerk of the Superior Court. Film # 141055 Batch # 537837) Marriage license states David Laswell's parents gave their assent to the marriage as David was 19 years old and under age. David is listed as a merchant from Taswell, Crawford County, Indiana. Emma is shown to be a resident of Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. The witnesses to the marriage were John J. Morgan and Emma's sister, Mary H. Morgan. The marriage took place at the Knox County Court House.

Laswell and upon his Oath deposes and Says that on or about the 2nd day of August 1891 that Emma E Laswell was guilty of profanity which was unlawful by Saying to one Larkin Miller that you are a "god dam lire" which was unlawful and contrary to the forms of the Statutes made and provided for in Such cases and against the peace and dignity of the State of Indiana.

Death Near Grantsburg; Mrs. Sherman Laswell died last Sunday at her home one and a half mile east of Grantsburg, aged about 35 years, after a continued illness of stomach trouble. The remains were buried Monday afternoon. The funeral services were held at the log Church and were largely attended. Mrs. Laswell leaves a husband and five children to mourn her departure. She was a highly respected woman and her death is a loss to the community, who deeply sympathize with the bereaved family. (Source: Crawford County Democrat; Thursday July 18 - 1905)
