Ernest Conrad, 74, of New London, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.
Born Oct. 25, 1934, in Keota, he was the son of Bernard and Leona Sanders Conrad. On July 8, 1961, he married Nancy Ann Farquharson in Gerard, Pa.
Mr. Conrad worked for IBM. In 1965, he received an award for inventing a method of forming a glass film on an object. In 1966, he was awarded A First Invention Achievement Award and a Corporate Invention Award, and in 1971, a Second Invention Achievement Award. He was recognized in Who's Who in Science and Engineering in 1998. He was a graduate of St. James High School in St. Paul. He served in the Navy.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Susan Martin of Burnsville, Minn.; four sons, Tim Conrad of Mount Pleasant, Stephen Conrad of Yarmouth, Joseph Conrad of Iowa City and Donald Conrad of Arlington, Tenn.; six brothers, Ray Conrad, Victor Conrad, Linus Conrad, Paul Conrad, David Conrad, and Tony Conrad; three sisters, Connie Menke, Bernadine Kruse and Karen Derksen; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.
No visitation is planned.
The funeral for Mr. Conrad will be private.
